INTERNSHIPS WITH THE NYS OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL:

The New York State Office of the Inspector General has four  internships available for  highly motivated, detailed-oriented individuals with who possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Interns are sought in the Case Management Unit, the Investigations Unit, as Legal interns, and as Audit Interns.

Pursuant to Executive Law Article 4-A, the Office of the State Inspector General investigates allegations of corruption, fraud, criminal activity, conflicts of interest or abuse in State agencies within its jurisdiction

Case Management Unit Intern
Allegations are received and processed through the Case Management Unit. Members of this Unit serves the integral function of examining allegations to determine whether such fall within the Inspector General’s jurisdiction and culling the necessary information to allow for further investigation.

Interns in this unit will work under the direction of the Case Management Supervisor and be responsible for the following duties:

  • Review and process written complaints and determine jurisdiction
  • Track complaints in a computerized case management system, forward correspondence to investigative staff, maintain filing system, and ensure correspondence is processed in a timely manner.
  • Populate the Intelligence database
  • Draft referral letters to other agencies
  • Perform research for the entire staff, including investigators, attorneys and auditors.
  • Assist executive management staff with miscellaneous tasks as requested
  • Creating databases, inputting data and analyzing such accordingly

Investigations Unit Intern
Interns in the Investigation Unit will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Assist investigative staff with implementing investigative strategies and ensuring that the data necessary for conducting successful investigations is properly gathered, documented and preserved;
  • Assist in completing reports documenting investigative steps;
  • Create spreadsheet and databases, input, search and analyze data accordingly;
  • Assist with record reviews;
  • Assist executive management and investigative staff with miscellaneous tasks as requested

Legal Intern
Interns will work under the supervision of the legal staff.  All case-related information and knowledge obtained in the performance of these duties will be treated as confidential information. Summer interns are expected to work a 40 hour work week.  Spring and Fall interns work a 8-16 hours a week. Though internships are non-paid positions, students may seek to earn course credit or funding through prior approval from their educational institution.

Interns will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Compiling & analyzing documents
  • Legal research and drafting of legal documents for staff attorneys
  • Proofreading & cite checking
  • Drafting correspondence to other state, local and federal agencies
  • Performing research for the entire staff, including investigators, attorneys and auditors
  • Assisting staff with miscellaneous tasks as requested
  • Creating databases, inputting data and analyzing such accordingly

Audit Intern
Interns will be responsible for the following duties:
