“Let’s Do Lunch” with Darius the Intern – An Overlooked Network

Hello again UAlbany Great Danes as I informed you in The Introduction blog I am the new Career Services Intern and your new career advice lunch buddy every Monday and Wednesday (no appointment necessary).

Reflecting back on my college journey I realized that majority of the opportunities that I was able to explore and gain was through “who I knew and not what I knew” (not to discredit my hard work).  As students we hold a natural conversation starter that most individuals are willing to listen and hear more about. However, even the students who do understand this advantage don’t always use it to its fullest potential.

Administrators, professors and any faculty/staff members often get overlooked in the building of relationships and networks. Your university staff has a natural investment in students and you’d be surprised how many are willing to take additional steps to help the students they encounter.

So what does all this mean? Good question!

Each university has numerous offices that work to support the success of each student; Career Services, Multicultural Student Success, Student Involvement & Leadership, Residential Life to name a few. Get to know these individuals who are providing resources and hosting events that are directed toward your successful transition and journey as students.  But also let’s not forget about our professors who also have an investment in students (even though we don’t always think so).

Basically before you network outside your universities look within your university; start introductions, follow-up, build relationships and establish your network.

Hope this sparked your interest but until next time stay tuned, keep up and “Let’s Do Lunch”.
